:- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Grandma in NY -- A very sad, well-written story that draws the reader in : I woke up during the night, after finishing this book, and cried. I am not likely to forget it soon, although I might wish I could. I didn't expect a book about child abuse to be pleasant or uplifting, and it isn't. But it is fascinating, emotional, very real -- and makes the reader care a lot. It takes a brave author to think about all this, much less write it down in such an unnerving way. She alludes to incidents and/or their outcomes more often than describing them in detail - letting the reader fill in the picture. The ending is kind of brilliant. I think this book is amazing but gave it four stars because it's heartbreaking. ( Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Michael -- Survivor : this book in whatever format is best for you, and be strong. There are Abigail Dean’s all over the place. Maybe not to the same extent, but they are everywhere. And they deserve to have their voices heard. ( Reviewed in the United States on March 17, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kathy Vikre -- Dealing with Horror : How does one deal with horror: fight back, learn to live with it, give up and die, or bury it far in the back of your mind? None of the characters in Girl A: A Novel deal with it in exactly the same way. People are complicated, right and wrong are not black and white. The story is a tragedy of spousal and child abuse. It unfolds over a period of time covering the years before, during, and after the abuse. Our voice through the journey is that of Lexi, the oldest girl (Girl A). Through her voice, we see madness developing, we feel the hurt, we are damaged, and we attempt to recover. This book is so well written it engaged me from the start. It is compelling and ultimately heart-wrenching; we are left with room to heal and an overwhelming sadness. We have dealt with horror. ( Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Maria McNally -- Excellent Book : Great book. Arrived day of publication sat down that afternoon to read and didn’t put it down until finished at 3am ( Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2021 )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from Jean92954 -- Need to follow it closely. : I'm still in the middle of reading this book. I kind of keep getting lost because it jumps around so much but I haven't gotten to the point where I want to stop reading it yet. ( Reviewed in the United States on February 16, 2021 )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from JRH -- Solid thriller with some caveats : This book pulled me in right away and led to some late night reading sessions. Really intriguing and creepy premise with good pacing. It was difficult to follow at times because the author switches frequently between past and present narrative with no demarcation for the reader. It’s a good book and I do recommend it but I must say I was a left feeling a little unsatisfied in the end—I wanted more details and more answers! - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Ellen B. -- One of the best books read in a long time : Wow! Very sad material here BUT this author has a gift of storytelling ! Could not put this down. Excellent ( Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from gbargentina -- Excellent novel : Esta novela no es un thriller o crime novel solamente, es una excelente novela. Fuerte, dolorosa a veces, pero muy bien escrita ( Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2021 )
- 2.0 out of 5 stars from The Cookster -- Some quality writing - but disappointing in other respects. : Rating: 2.3/5 ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 21, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kelly McFarland -- A compelling and heart wrenching debut that you will never forget reading. : Girl A is the stunning and unforgettable debut from author Abigail Dean and easily has a place in the top 5 best books I have ever read. - 1.0 out of 5 stars from White Rose -- a recommendation, don't buy Sunday Times best sellers ever again : I read 31% of this book and came to the conclusion someone was having a joke with the crime fans out there. I read about 25% of the last 'international bestseller from the Sunday Times before I decided someone was having a joke with historical fiction fans, too. In that case (bodysnatchers theme) the author got his 'facts' screamingly wrong. I know, I've done the research. Then there was the Stephen King rip off... - 1.0 out of 5 stars from William M. -- Over Hyped : I found it tedious and boring. Another reminder if I read the same book as the people who rate it. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 25, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Matt -- A brilliant, must-read debut novel : This book is a truly brilliant debut novel. The characters are written beautifully, with the narrative switching back between their childhoods spent in the ‘house of horrors’ to the present day. The book really focuses on the after effects of trauma - how does each sibling move on from what they experienced? ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 24, 2021 )
